"The big box" or rather Safaricom's TV Set Box is being launched today at the Safaricom Shop at Sarit Centre. This will occur at a one-off cost of Sh9,999 or Sh4,999 followed by 6-monthly payments of Sh999. Bundles will be reloaded using a *422# USSD code. Apart from astonishingly cheap data bundles, there will also be free YouTube for users for three months via the youtube URL www.youtube.com. This confirms the speculation that the Big Box, running Android, will provide internet access via a 4G SIM slot as well as act as a wireless hotspot besides also being a gaming device.

Safaricom's box seems certainly a play for home internet particularly given the rollout of its 4G/LTE Service. In addition, the decoder has HD and 4G capabilities making a good combination for delivery of Video on demand. The device will also be able to support up to 10 devices through its hotspot capabilities. It will have around 35 channels with the following showing some of the available free-to-air.

Mr Bob Collymore said, “We want to get into the entertainment space and provide access to content users want and not what the broadcasters want.” Simply put, that’s video on demand. The boxes will only be sold in Safaricom shops.
